DETROIT, May 31 (UPI) -- Andy Phillips knocked in four runs, including two in the 5-run New York 11th inning, giving the Yankees an 11-6 victory over the Detroit Tigers.
Yankees reliever Mariano Rivera (3-3) pitched three innings in Tuesday's game and collected the victory while Detroit closer Todd Jones (0-2) was charged with all five New York runs in the 11th and took the loss.
New York led 5-0 at one point but saw the Tigers come back behind Ivan Rodriquez, who had a solo home run and a 2-run triple. Brandon Inge scored a run in the sixth inning and drove in another in the eighth to pull Detroit even at 6-6.
Jason Giambi, with one out in the New York 11th, hit his 13th home run of the season to put the Yankees ahead. Alex Rodriquez and Kelly Stinnett had consecutive singles. Detroit got another out but Bernie Williams singled in a run and, after a walk, Phillips drove in two runs and Melky Cabrera the final one with his fourth hit of the game.
Philips drove in a run in a 4-run New York rally in the second inning and made the score 6-1 with a sacrifice fly in the fifth.
