BUFFALO, N.Y., May 30 (UPI) -- Daniel Briere's goal 4:22 into overtime enabled Buffalo to avoid elimination with a 2-1 win over Carolina in Game Six of the NHL Eastern Conference finals.

Briere also assisted on J.P. Dumont's first-period goal for the Sabres, who now travel to Raleigh for the series finale on Thursday. Goaltender Ryan Miller made 25 saves in the victory.

Bret Hedican tied the contest in the latter stages of the third period for Carolina, which must wait two more days for another chance to reach the Stanley Cup Finals for the second time in four seasons.

Cam Ward, who replaced Martin Gerber in goal midway through Game Five, allowed two goals on 31 shots.
