MLB: San Diego 2, Atlanta 1

SAN DIEGO, May 24 (UPI) -- San Diego starter Mike Thompson allowed four hits over seven innings and the Padres' offense had just two hits in a 2-1 victory over the Atlanta Braves.

Thompson (2-0) struck out two and did not walk a batter in collecting the victory Tuesday. One of the hits he gave up was a home run to Atlanta pitcher Jorge Sosa.

Sosa (1-6) gave up just two hits and three walks over 6 2/3 innings but still took the loss.

Sosa's home run -- his second of the season -- opened the Atlanta sixth and tied the score at 1-1. However, walks got him in trouble in the seventh. Mike Piazza walked to open the inning and, after an out, Adrian Gonzalez singled. Vinny Castilla walked to load the bases and Josh Barfield reached on a Chipper Jones error that allowed a run to score.

The Padres' first run came in the third off an RBI single by Mike Cameron.
