ST. LOUIS, May 18 (UPI) -- Mark Mulder and Jason Isringhausen combined on a four-hit shutout Wednesday night as St. Louis beat the New York Mets, 1-0.

Scott Rolen drove in the lone run; and Mulder had two hits in three at-bats for the Cardinals (25-15). St. Louis moved one-half game ahead of New York for the best record in the National League despite having only four hits.

In 8 1/3 innings, Mulder (5-1), who won his third straight start, scattered four hits, walking two and striking out five. Through the first four innings, he retired 11 of the first 13 batters he faced and Isringhausen chalked up his 12th save.

David Wright had two of the four hits for the Mets (24-15), who have lost six times in their last nine games.

Losing pitcher Steve Trachsel (2-4) yielded one run and four hits in seven innings with three walks and two strikeouts.
