MLB: San Diego 14, Arizona 10

SAN DIEGO, May 18 (UPI) -- Brian Giles drove in seven runs, including four in a 9-run San Diego first inning, to pace the Padres to a 14-10 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The first-inning outburst Wednesday allowed the Padres to survive an 8-run rally by Arizona. Giles had a 3-run home run in the eighth inning to seal the win. Mike Thompson (1-0) earned the victory in his major league debut.

Arizona starter Juan Cruz (1-2) was charged with all nine of the Padres' first-inning runs. Giles had a run-scoring single early in the rally and capped it with a 3-run double. Geoff Blum also knocked in two runs in the inning.

Adrian Gonzalez was credited with a sacrifice fly for San Diego in the second inning to make the score 10-0 before Arizona got on the board with a sacrifice fly by Conor Jackson. Shawn Green singled a run for Arizona before Gonzalez homered for San Diego to make the score 11-2 going into the sixth.

Thompson allowed consecutive singles to load the bases in the Arizona sixth and was pulled for a reliever. Jackson doubled in two runs, Johnny Estrada drove in Jackson and Tony Clark hit a 3-run home run to make the score 11-8. Eric Byrnes had a 2-run homer in the inning to pull the Diamondbacks with 11-10 before the Padres got out of the inning.
