Jarrett, Yates penalized by Nextel Cup

DAYTONA, Fla., May 10 (UPI) -- The Nextel Cup racing team of Robert Yates has been penalized for violations during last Saturday's Crown Royal 400 race at Richmond, Va.

In a statement, NASCAR said the penalty was imposed for action detrimental to stock car racing involving parts, components or equipment used "that do not conform to NASCAR rules." The statement singled out the use of unapproved rear sway bar mounting for use other than anti-roll.

"Obviously, in this case, we interpreted the rules differently from NASCAR," Yates said. "But because of the lack of a clear-cut understanding on our part, we believe we have grounds for appeal and have started that process."

Team owner Yates has been penalized 25 owner championship points. Driver Dale Jarrett was penalized 25 driver championship points, and crew chief Richard "Slugger" Labbe was fined $25,000 and suspended until June 7.

The violations were discovered during a pre-race inspection on May 6.
