Safarova drops Prague tennis opener

PRAGUE, Czech Republic, May 9 (UPI) -- Second-seeded Czech crowd favorite Lucie Safarova was a first-round upset victim Tuesday at the $145,000 Prague Open.

Seventeen-year-old Slovakian wild card Magdalena Rybarikova dropped the first set against Safarova before posting a 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 6-4 decision on the red clay at CLTK Praha.

Four other seeds avoided Day-2 upsets, as No. 4 Emilie Loit of France handled Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska 6-2, 6-4, No. 5 Aussie Samantha Stosur stifled South African qualifier Natalie Grandin 6-2, 6-2, No. 6 Italian Maria Elena Camerin whipped Ukrainian Olga Savchuk, 6-4, 6-1, and No. 7 Chinese Shuai Peng pounded American Bethanie Mattek, 6-2, 6-3.

Other opening-round winners were Hungarian Melinda Czink, Croat Karolina Sprem, Czech qualifier Michaela Pastikova and Venezuelan Milagros Sequera.

The 2006 Prague winner will collect $22,900.
