EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J., April 24 (UPI) -- John Madden had a hat trick Monday to lead the New Jersey Devils to a 4-1 win over the New York Rangers and take a 2-0 lead in their Eastern quarterfinal.

Brian Gionta scored a goal and Martin Brodeur made 25 saves for the Devils, who have won their last 13 games. Jay Pandolfo had three assists and Paul Martin two.

Game 3 is scheduled for Wednesday at Madison Square Garden.

Blair Betts scored the lone Rangers' goal and Kevin Weekes stopped 21-of-25 shots in the loss, New York's seventh straight. Weekes took the place of Game 1 goaltender Henrik Lundqvist, who has been hampered by a hip flexor.

The Rangers also were playing without leading scorer, Jaromir Jagr, who was a scratch with an upper body injury suffered in Game 1.
