Kenseth maintains Nextel Cup points lead

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., April 23 (UPI) -- Matt Kenseth holds a 9-point lead over Jimmie Johnson in the latest Nextel Cup standings.

The official list was released Sunday after the Subway Fresh 500 race at Phoenix the night before.

In that race, Kenseth, who has 1,218 points, finished third and Johnson (1,209) was seventh. Kasey Kahne, who finished sixth at Phoenix, holds down third place in the latest standings at 1,167 points with Mark Martin (1,017) fourth and Phoenix runner-up Tony Stewart fifth with 966 points.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. (951), defending champion Kyle Busch (950), Jeff Gordon (911), Subway 500 winner Kevin Harvick (859) and Casey Mears (845) round out the top 10.

Among the drivers out of championship contention at present are Bobby and Terry Labonte, Carl Edwards, Greg Biffle, Joe Nemechek and Kyle Petty.

Rookie Clint Bowyer, who was fifth at Phoenix, is 13th in the points standings with 750.
