Jerry Pate is one stroke further back at 137. NBC announcer Bob Murphy is fourth after his second straight 69.

Hale Irwin, the 2004 champion, shot 69 and shares fifth place with Allen Doyle and Peter Jacobsen at 139.

"I hit a lot of good shots out there today," said Haas. "I had a nice stretch of holes between 10 and 17. It was a good back nine except the bad seven-iron on the 18th. I can't be unhappy with 4-under though."

Tom Jenkins (69) and Mark Johnson (70) share eighth place at 140.
