SAVANNAH, Ga., April 21 (UPI) -- Jay Haas opened with a 6-under-par 66 Friday and has a two-stroke lead after one round of the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf in Savannah, Ga.
Gil Morgan, Mark McNulty, Tom Wargo and Jerry Pate all shot 4-under 68 and share second place.
"It was a good start, you need to do that in a three-round event," said the 52-year-old Haas. "The birdies on 14 and 15 turned a good round into a very good round."
Bob Murphy and Craig Stadler are tied for sixth place at 3-under 69. Pate won the Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am earlier this year.
Defending champion Des Smyth shot 2-under-par 70 and is joined by Jim Albus, Morris Hatalsky, 2004 champion Hale Irwin, Peter Jacobsen, Mark Johnson, Mike Reid and Scott Simpson in eighth place.
