Forerunner winner collapses after race

LEXINGTON, Ky., April 21 (UPI) -- Up an Octave broke down just after winning the Forerunner Stakes in Kentucky, injuring top jockey John Velazquez.

The 3-year-old colt broke his left foreleg in the accident Thursday at the Keeneland Race Track and had to be euthanized.

Velazquez was diagnosed with a broken shoulder blade, an injury that will probably keep him out of the Kentucky Derby. He has been the primary jockey for three Derby contenders, Bluegrass Cat, Keyed Entry and Sunriver.

Velazquez, an Eclipse Award winner, was voted the champion jockey in the two past year and is third in earnings this year.

The jockey was hospitalized at the University of Kentucky Medical Center to determine if he needed surgery.
