DETROIT, April 16 (UPI) -- Mike Maroth threw seven shutout innings Sunday as the Detroit Tigers beat Cleveland, 1-0.
Chris Shelton hit his eighth homer of the season in the fourth inning to account for the game's lone run.
Maroth (2-0) allowed three hits, walked two and struck out five. The young south-paw, who was on two days of extra rest due to inflammation in his pitching elbow, has given up just one earned run in 12 1/3 innings this season.
Fernando Rodney hurled a hitless ninth inning to register his third save. Detroit is 7-5 after winning two of its past three games.
Losing pitcher Cliff Lee (1-1) gave up the one run and five hits in 7 2/3 innings with three walks and six strikeouts. Aaron Boone had two hits for the Indians (7-5).
Cleveland has lost two of its last three games.
