Fish, Melzer have surprise wins at Houston

HOUSTON, April 16 (UPI) -- Two un-seeded players, American Mardy Fish and Jurgen Melzer of Austria, will meet in Sunday's final of the U.S. Clay Court Championships in Houston.

Both men registered surprising wins in Saturday's semifinals.

Fish advanced when No. 5 seed Tommy Haas of Gemany retired following the fifth game of the first set because of a right wrist injury. Melzer topped seventh-seeded Paul Goldstein of the U.S., 6-3, 6-4.

The win gave Melzer his second win in as many matches against the 29-year-old Goldstein after a victory in three sets last year at Indian Wells, Calif.

It was the first semifinal for Fish since June 2004. He had missed significant time because of a wrist injury of his own.

Prior to Saturday's semifinal, Fish had lost two meetings against Haas.

The winner of Sunday's title match will claim $52,000.
