April 11, 2006 at 11:16 PM

PHILADELPHIA, April 11 (UPI) -- Jeff Carter scored the game-winning goal late in the third period Tuesday to give the Philadelphia Flyers a 4-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Joni Pitkanen had a goal and an assist and Simon Gagne and Brian Savage each added a goal for the Flyers, who have won two of their last three games. Robert Esche made 23 saves for Philadelphia.

The Flyers' win coupled with the Rangers' loss to the Islanders Tuesday pulled Philadelphia within three points of first place in the NHL Atlantic Division. The Flyers are two points ahead of sixth-place New Jersey, which defeated the Carolina Hurricanes in overtime on Tuesday.

Sidney Crosby had a goal and an assist and Ryan Whitney and Michel Ouellet a goal apiece for Pittsburgh, which has lost four of its last five games.
