Schnyder takes second-round victory

AMELIA ISLAND, Fla., April 6 (UPI) -- Second-seeded Swiss Patty Schnyder and fifth-seeded Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova were second-round winners at Florida's $600,000 Bausch & Lomb Championships.

The world No. 9 Schnyder, who received a bye into the second round this week, leveled American Lisa Raymond 6-2, 6-2 Wednesday on the clay courts at Amelia Island Plantation. Up next for Schnyder will be Russian Vera Dushevina, who downed Ukrainian Alona Bondarenko 6-1, 6-4.

Kuznetsova, who won the Nasdaq-100 Open last week in Miami, survived a scare against Swede Sofia Arvidsson, winning 6-1, 5-7, 6-2. Kuznetsova will take on 11th-seeded Spaniard Anabel Medina Garrigues in the next round. Medina Garrigues handled Ukrainian Olga Savchuk 6-1, 7-5.

A rash of upsets occurred on Day 3, including ones for top-10 seeds Elena Likhovtseva of Russia and Flavia Pennetta of Italy. German Julia Schruff shut down the sixth-seeded Likhovtseva 6-4, 6-4, while Russian Elena Vesnina vaulted past the eighth-seeded Pennetta 6-2, 6-1. Schruff got past Likhovtseva by winning the last five games of the match.

An additional upset came when Italian Maria Elena Camerin knocked out 14th- seeded Slovenian Katarina Srebotnik 6-4, 6-3.
