North Carolina advances in women's NCAA

CLEVELAND, March 26 (UPI) -- Ivory Latta made a layup with 2.8 seconds remaining Sunday, as North Carolina beat Purdue in the NCAA Women's Tournament Cleveland Regional semifinal.

Top-seeded North Carolina set up a regional final match-up with Tennessee Tuesday night. The Lady Vols advanced Sunday with a 76-69 decision over Rutgers.

The last of the regional semifinals, played Sunday night in Bridgeport, Conn., saw Duke overwhelm Michigan State, 86-61, and Connecticut pull out a thrilling 77-75 win over Georgia.

Barbara Turner hit a well-guarded three-point shot with 1.8 seconds left to give Connecticut the victory.

Latta scored 19 points to help North Carolina improve to 32-1. Erlana Larkins paced the Tar Heels with 23.

Tennessee was led by Candace Parker with 29 in its win over Rutgers.

The first two members of the women's Final Four will be determined Monday night when Utah plays Maryland in Albuquerque and LSU faces Stanford in San Antonio.
