Former NFL star indicted

SAN FRANCISCO, March 23 (UPI) -- Former San Francisco 49ers placekicker Ray Wersching has been indicted for allegedly embezzling more than $8 million in insurance premiums.

The six-count federal indictment against Wersching, 55, now owner of an insurance company in Redwood City, Calif., also charges him with evading taxes on $3.6 million of corporate income in 1999 and 2000.

Former company co-owner Mary Ann Locke was indicted earlier on similar embezzlement charges.

Wersching, a California grad, had a 15-year National Football League career, playing for the San Diego Chargers from 1973 to 1976 and for the 49ers for the next 11 years. He set several team records and sill holds a Super Bowl record with five career field goals.
