Roy Williams named coach of the year

It was the second such honor for Williams, who received the award in 1990 while with Kansas.

North Carolina lost the top seven scorers from its 2005 national championship team, but Williams guided the Tar Heels to a 23-8 record this season. They were upset in the second round of the NCAA Tournament by George Mason.

The Tar Heels' Tyler Hansbrough was named freshman of the year. He averaged 18.9 points and 7.8 rebounds, becoming the first freshman ever to lead North Carolina in scoring.

The USBWA will announce its player of the year next week.
