Fisichella wins Malaysian Grand Prix

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, March 19 (UPI) -- Giancarlo Fisichella of Italy captured Sunday's Formula One Malaysian Grand Prix near Kuala Lumpur in 100-degree heat.

It was his first victory of the year and third of his F1 career.

Renault teammate Fernando Alonso was the runner-up. After 10 laps, Fisichella owned a 4.2-second lead over Jenson Button, 13.5 seconds over Alonzo and never was really threatened after that.

It was the first one-two finish for Renault in 24 years.

Button finished third, Juan Pablo Montoya fourth and Felipe Massa fifth. Massa, Michael Schumacher, Jacques Villeneuve and Ralf Schumacher completed the points-scoring positions.

Alonso (18 points) expanded his championship lead to seven points over Schumacher (11) and Button (11).

The next F1 race is Sunday, April 2, in Melbourne.
