Federer wins; Roddick out at Indian Wells

INDIAN WELLS, Calif., March 16 (UPI) -- Roger Federer Wednesday advanced to the quarterfinals of the Pacific Life Open Tennis Tournament at Indian Wells, Calif.

Federer, the top seed and two-time defending champion, beat Richard Gasquet of France, 6-3, 6-4, in the third round.

Elsewhere, No. 2 seed Rafael Nadal ousted Sebastien Grosjean of France, 6-4, 6-2; Igor Andreev of Russia knocked off third-seeded Andy Roddick, 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 6-1; Australian Open runner-up Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus blasted No. 23 seed Tomas Berdych, 6-4, 6-1; Paradorn Srichaphan of Thailand edged fourth-seeded David Nalbandian, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 6-2; 12th-seed James Blake topped No. 26 Tommy Haas after Hass retired in the second set with Blake leading, 6-3, 3-0; Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia beat countryman Mario Ancic, 6-3, 6-4; and Finland's Jarkko Nieminen topped un-seeded Marat Safin of Russia, 6-4, 6-3.
