INDIAN WELLS, Calif., March 14 (UPI) -- Swiss Martina Hingis beat American Lindsay Davenport in a battle of former No. 1s Tuesday to reach the quarterfinals at the $2.1 million Pacific Life Open.

Hingis defeated the second-seeded Davenport 6-3, 1-6, 6-2.

Davenport and Hingis have now met 25 times on the WTA Tour, with Davenport holding a 14-11 lifetime advantage. The two stars hadn't met since 2001, when Davenport won two straight matches.

Hingis beat Davenport in the 1998 Indian Wells final, while Davenport avenged that setback in the 2000 title bout at Indian Wells.

Hingis, 25, has now beaten two fellow former world No. 1s since rejoining the tour in January. She beat Maria Sharapova in Tokyo back in February.

Up next for the five-time Grand Slam champion Hingis will be Russian Dinara Safin, who defeated fifth-seeded countrywoman Anastasia Myskina, the 2004 French Open champion, 6-1, 6-3.
