Raymond leads winners at Indian Wells

INDIAN WELLS, Colo., March 9 (UPI) -- Lisa Raymond and Meghann Shaughnessy Wednesday were first-round winners at the Pacific Life Open tennis tounament at Indian Wells, Calif. In front of a home crowd, Raymond escaped a stern challenge from qualifier Katerina Bohmova of Czechoslovakia, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5); while Shaughnessy topped Kaia Kanepi of Estonia, 7-6 (7-4), 6-1.

Also winning were Jamea Jackson, who ousted Anna Tatishvili of Russia, 6-2, 6-3; Mashona Washington of the U.S., who beat Maria Sanchez Lorenzo of Spain, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3; and American Ashley Harkleroad, who beat Zheng Jie of China, 6-3, 7-5; Samantha Stosur of Australia beat qualifier Yuliana Fedak of the Ukraine, 3-6, 6-3, 6-0. They were joined by Ekaterina Bychkova, Maret Ani, Sybille Bammer, Julia Schruff, Eleni Daniilidou, Emmanuelle Gagliardi, Martina Sucha, qualifier Camille Pin of France, qualifiers Yuan Meng and Tathiana Garbin.
