NEW YORK, March 9 (UPI) -- Gerry McNamara sank three free throws in the closing seconds of overtime Thursday as Syracuse upset No. 1 Connecticut, 86-84, in the Big East quarterfinals.
McNamara, whose three-pointer at the end of regulation sent the contest into the extra session, had 17 points, five rebounds and 13 assists; Terrence Roberts had 18 points and eight rebounds; Demetris Nichols had 17 points and four rebounds; Eric Devendorf totaled 13 points, three rebounds, an assist and a steal; and Darryl Watkins had 12 points and six rebounds for the Orange (21-11), who broke a three-game slide.
Denham Brown had 20 points and seven rebounds; Marcus Williams added 17 points, two rebounds and 11 assists; Hilton Armstrong had 14 points and 10 rebounds; and Rudy Gay totaled 12 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals for the Huskies (27-3), who had beaten Syracuse twice during the regular season.
