NHL: Carolina 2, NY Rangers 1

NEW YORK, March 6 (UPI) -- Martin Gerber made 37 saves Monday when the Carolina Hurricanes edged the New York Rangers, 2-1.

Justin Williams and Kevyn Adams each scored for the Hurricanes, who have won five in a row.

Steve Rucchin scored the lone goal for the Rangers, who have dropped consecutive games for the first time since Jan. 14-16. New York goalie Henrik Lundqvist made his first appearance since leading Sweden to an Olympic gold medal in Italy and had 17 saves.

The Rangers outshot the Hurricanes 17-0 in the third period, marking the first time New York held an opponent without a shot in a period since the first period against the Blues in St. Louis on Jan. 22, 2000.

New York's Jaromir Jagr, the league's leading scorer, was held without a point for the second straight game, marking the first time this season that has happened.
