TUCSON, Feb. 27 (UPI) -- Outspoken White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen is staying out of a war of words between General Manager Ken Williams and former Chicago slugger Frank Thomas.
Thomas, now a member of the Oakland Athletics, has been open in expressing his resentment after being released by the 2005 World Series champions, where he had a 16-year Hall of Fame-caliber career. Thomas hoped to end his playing days in a White Sox uniform but ended up signing with the A's. The Sox traded for slugger Jim Thome and signed Paul Konerko to a five-year, $60-million contract.
Williams accused Thomas of being a whiner and said he was a selfish player. "He's an idiot," Williams said in a profanity-laced interview at spring training in Tucson, Ariz.
Asked about Thomas' verbal shots at Williams, Guillen uncharacteristically had no comment. "There's a bunch of controversy going on and it doesn't involve me," Guillen told the Chicago Tribune's baseball writer. "I have to tell Kenny what he always tells me -- no comment."
The Sox meet Oakland for exhibition games March 7 and March 13.
