Ned Yost gets contract extension

MILWAUKEE, Feb. 26 (UPI) -- Milwaukee Brewers Manager Ned Yost Saturday signed a two-year contract extension.

The deal runs through the 2008 season with a club option to continue it for 2009. In in his third season in 2005, Yost guided the Brewers to an 81-81 record, ending the club's string of 12 consecutive losing seasons after a 14-game improvement.

"I strongly believe Ned is the right person to lead the Milwaukee Brewers on the field," said Brewers executive vice president and general manager Doug Melvin. "His work ethic, leadership skills and passion for the Brewers fans coupled with his commitment to make the entire organization successful confirmed to us that this was the right thing to do as we move forward in our pursuit of playing in the post-season."

Yost was fifth in voting for the National League's 2005 Manager of the Year behind Atlanta's Bobby Cox, St. Louis' Tony LaRussa, Washington's Frank Robinson and Houston's Phil Garner.
