COSTA DO SAUIPE, Brazil, Feb. 24 (UPI) -- Juan Ignacio Chela was a surprise quarterfinal loser on Thursday at the Brasil Open in Costa do Sauipe, Brazil.
Juan Monaco blasted the fifth-seeded Chela, 6-3, 6-2 to reach the semifinals. Monaco next faces sixth-seeded Nicolas Massu, who topped Nicolas Almagro, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.

In the day's other big surprise, un-seeded Olivier Patience rallied to beat eighth-seeded Boris Pashanski, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. Also, the seventh seed, Alberto Martin, was able to get past Jiri Vanek, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.
The eventual Brasil Open champion will earn $52,000.
