Sweden wins curling gold on final shot

TURIN, Italy, Feb. 23 (UPI) -- A spectacular final shot by Anette Norberg turned potential defeat into a gold medal for Sweden Thursday in the finals of women's Olympic curling.

Sweden defeated Switzerland in the gold medal game, 7-6, needing an extra end to do so.

The bronze medal went to Canada, which defeated Norway in the third-place game, 11-5. Canada scored four points in the opening end and was never threatened.

Switzerland skip Mirjam Ott produced two points in the 10th end to tie the game and with one rock remaining in the extra end, the Swiss had two rocks in scoring position.

Norberg needed to ricochet her final shot off one of the Swiss rocks and hit the other to force them out of scoring position. She pulled it off to perfection, dispatching the Swiss rocks and leaving the Swedish rock in a position to pick up the winning point.

This was the third time curling has been contested at the Olympics and Sweden won its first gold medal. The Swedes won the bronze medal in Nagano, but were shut out of the medals in Salt Lake City.
