USA curlers clinch semifinal berth

TURIN, Italy, Feb. 19 (UPI) -- The U.S. men's Olympic curling team clinched a spot in the semifinals Sunday with one game remaining in the tournament's round-robin phase.

Finland and Britain will also take part in the semifinals with the fourth position to be determined Monday.

The Americans wrapped up a berth in the medal round with a 9-8 morning win over Britain. The United States scored four points in the third end, owned a five-point lead with three ends remaining and held on.

Finland then defeated Britain in their final round-robin match, 5-2. The Finns qualified with a 7-2 record; the United States is 6-2 and Britain is 6-3. Canada goes into Monday's game against the United States at 5-3.

If the Canadians lose, they will drop into a tie with Norway at 5-4 and Switzerland could also be 5-4 with a victory over Italy.

Tie-break games would then be played to determine the fourth semifinalist.

In the women's tournament, Sweden (7-1) and Switzerland (6-2) have clinched semifinal berths, leaving Canada, Britain, Japan and Russia to fight over the final two spots Monday.
