TURIN, Italy, Feb. 18 (UPI) -- Highlights from Saturday's action at the Winter Olympics:
-- American Shani Davis became the first back athlete to win an individual Winter Olympics gold medal. He captured the men's 1,000-meter speed skating event, in which he holds the world record.
-- Switzerland stunned Canada in the hockey tournament and Slovakia downed the United States. Finland and Slovakia are the only unbeaten teams in the tournament as the chances increase for an unlikely gold medalist.
-- South Korea dominated the short-track skating finals, winning two golds and two silvers. Hyun-soo Ahn got the best of his American rival Apolo Anton Ohno in the 1,000-meter race. It was Ahn's second gold while Ohno won his first medal -- a bronze.
-- In a battle of Alpine veterans, Norway's Kjetil Andre Aamodt and Austria's Hermann Maier finished 1-2 in the super-giant slalom. Bode Miller of the United States missed a gate.
-- Janica Kostelic of Croatia won the fourth Olympic gold of her career in the Alpine combined.
-- The United States remained atop the gold medal race with seven, one more than Germany and Russia. Norway's 17 overall medals leads the way.
