TURIN, Italy, Feb. 17 (UPI) -- Highlights from Friday's action at the Winter Olympics:

-- The U.S. women's hockey team was unexpectedly beaten in the semifinals, falling to Sweden in a shootout, 3-2. The Americans lost a two-goal lead and was then blanked in the shootout (2-0) by goalie Kim Martin. Sweden will play Canada for the gold on Monday.

-- American Lindsey Jacobellis had a huge lead in the snowboarding cross finals when, as she was sailing over the final jump, she grabbed the edge of the board in what observers felt was a showboating stunt. She fell and lost the gold medal to Tanja Frieden of Switzerland. Jacobellis said she was trying to maintain her balance in the strong wind. Whatever the reason, she had to settle for second place.

-- The snowboarding silver was the only medal of the day for the United States, which still leads in golds with six. Norway failed to add to its 13 medals, but holds the overall lead.

-- Estonia won its third gold of the games, a cross-country triumph by Andros Veerpalu. The country had won only one gold in its history coming into these Games.
