USA bounces back with 4-1 hockey win

TURIN, Italy, Feb. 16 (UPI) -- Bill Guerin scored 94 seconds into the game Thursday night and the United States Olympic hockey team righted its ship with a 4-1 defeat of Kazakhstan.

Switzerland, meanwhile, stunned the heavily favored Czech Republic, 3-2.

The United States came back from its tournament-opening, 3-3 tie with Latvia to overcome a defensive-minded Kazakhstan team that gave up seven goals to Canada on Wednesday.

Elsewhere Thursday, Finland brushed past Italy, 6-0; Russia scored a surprisingly easy 5-0 win over Sweden; Slovakia outlasted Latvia, 6-3; and Canada rolled over Germany, 5-1.

Canada and Finland are tied atop Group A with 2-0 marks while Slovakia (2-0) is the only unbeaten team in Group B. The United States is 1


1 in Group B.

The top four teams in each of the six-team groups will reach the quarterfinals.

The Czechs struggled against Germany on Wednesday as goaltender Dominik Hasek suffered a leg injury. Switzerland was outshot, 32-19, but Mark Streit put the Swiss ahead early in the third period.

The men take Friday off while the women play their semifinals -- Canada vs. Finland and the United States vs. Sweden.
