TURIN, Italy, Feb. 12 (UPI) -- Highlights from Sunday's action at the Winter Olympics:
-- A lingering groin strain and a new hip injury forced five-time world champion Michelle Kwan to abandon her final chance for an Olympic gold. That opened a spot on the figure skating squad for Emily Hughes, sister of the 2002 Olympic winner.
-- Americans Bode Miller, Daron Rahlves and Apolo Anton Ohno were medal favorites, but none came through. Miller and Rahlves lost out in the downhill, where Frenchman Antoine Deneriaz was the winner. Ohno failed to reach the 1,500 short-track finals.
-- Shaun White, known as, "the flying tomato," because of his long, red hair, won gold in the snowboard halfpipe. Fellow-American Danny Kass finished second.
-- The snowboarding medals were all the Americans could muster as 15 nations divided the day's 24 medals. Germany and the United States lead in golds with two each. Norway leads overall with seven medals, one of them gold.
-- The first three finishers in the men's cross-country pursuit were separated by less than a second after 30 kilometers. Russian Eugeni Dementiev won the race.
-- Canada and Team USA won their second women's hockey game in runaways.
