TURIN, Italy, Feb. 12 (UPI) -- Antoine Deneriaz of France became the surprise Olympic gold medal winner in the men's downhill Sunday.

Michael Walchhofer of Austria earned the silver and Bruno Kernen of Switzerland took the bronze. Americans Bode Miller and Daron Rahlves finished fifth and 10, respectively. Deneriaz finished seven-tenths of a second ahead of Walchhofer, the event's largest margin of victory in 42 years.
