Saturday's Olympic Highlights

TURIN, Italy, Feb. 11 (UPI) -- Here are some highlights from Saturday's action at the Winter Olympics.

American Chad Hedrick won the first of what he hopes will be five individual gold medals, capturing the 5,000-meter speed skating event. He defeated current world record holder Sven Kramer of the Netherlands.

Hedrick's medal was the only one the United States could manage on the opening day of competition. The Americans were surprisingly shut out in women's freestyle moguls.

Germany won two of the day's four medal events -- Georg Hettich holding off Felix Gottwald of Austria in the Nordic combined, and Michael Greis defeating biathlon superstar Ole Einar Bjoerndalen of Norway in the 20-kilometer race.

Norway led in overall medals with four, but none of them were gold.

The American women's hockey team got off to a sluggish start before pouring it on in the third period for a 6-0 win over Switzerland. A win over Germany on Sunday would wrap up a semifinal berth for Team USA.

Luge legend Georg Hackl finished two of four singles runs in fifth place. In his previous five Olympics, Hackl won three golds and two silvers.
