TURIN, Italy, Feb. 11 (UPI) -- Michelle Kwan skipped her Olympic practice session Saturday and expressed concern that she would be fit enough to compete in next week's figure skating event.
Kwan, a five-time world champion but never an Olympic gold medalist, chose not to go through her routine and merely skated around the practice ice in an attempt to loosen up.
"I got on the ice and I was a little stiff," Kwan said. "I just wanted to get out and get my legs under me and test the ice."
Kwan was unable to compete in the American Olympic trials last month because of a groin injury, but was given a spot on the team after she successfully skated for a panel of judges.
"Dropping out, it's not something I want to do, but I have to listen to how my feelings are," she said.
If Kwan cannot compete, her spot on the team would be taken by Emily Hughes. When asked on Saturday what advice she would give Hughes, Kwan said:
"Be prepared."
