103-pound girl wrestles the boys to title

CHUGIAK, Alaska, Feb. 6 (UPI) -- A petite Alaskan became the first girl in U.S. history to win a statewide high-school wrestling title competing on equal terms with boys.

Michaela Hutchison won the 103-pound class Saturday night. Hundreds of people packed a gym at Chugiak High School, chanting "C'mon Michaela" and "Girl Power" after she defeated Aaron Boss 1-0, the Anchorage Daily News reported.

Hutchison, a sophomore at Skyview High School in Soldotna on the Kenai Peninsula, had been ranked No. 1 in the 103-pound class during the entire season.

She comes from a family of wrestlers. Her sister, Melina, came close to a state title six years ago, placing second, and her brother, Eli, won a fourth state title on Saturday.
