Massu qualifies for the Movistar semis

VINA DEL MAR, Chile, Feb. 3 (UPI) -- Crowd favorite Nicolas Massu of Chile Friday beat qualifier Carlos Cuadrado in the quarterfinals of the Movistar Open at Vina del Mar.

The scores were 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3, after Massu -- who won an Olympic gold meal in 2004 -- won the second-set tiebreaker.

Fernando Gonzalez -- who was last year's runner-up at this event and won it in 2002 and 2004 -- beat Boris Pashanski, 6-4, 6-3. Jose Acasuso rallied to top Leos Friedl, 3-6, 6-1, 7-5. Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo -- who surprised top-seeded and defending Vina del Mar champion Gaston Gaudio in the second round -- knocked off No. 6 Albert Montanes, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2.

In the semifinals, Ramirez Hidalgo will face the hard-hitting Acasuso and Massu plays Gonzalez. The tournament's eventual winner will claim a first prize of $52,500.
