Cuba to play in World Baseball Classic

WASHINGTON, Jan. 20 (UPI) -- Cuba will be allowed to send to a team to the United States for the World Baseball Classic this spring, The Washington Post reported Friday.

The newspaper cited two unnamed sources as saying the U.S. Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control would be issuing a license for the Cuban team's participation. Neither the Treasury Department nor Major League Baseball would comment on the report.

World Baseball Classic officials had applied to the Treasury Department for a license for Cuba to play in the tournament, but federal officials said that would be a violation of the United States' embargo on Cuba.

The World Baseball Classic is a 16-nation tournament that runs March 3-20 at locations from Japan to the Caribbean before wrapping up with finals in San Diego, Calif. Organizers say Cuba would play in the first round at San Juan, Puerto Rico.
