Davenport, 29, won this event in 2000 and was last year's Melbourne runner-up to Serena Williams.

Davenport has not won a Grand Slam in six years. She committed 26 unforced errors and had only 18 winners, but won 80 percent of the points on her powerful first serve. Davenport was helped out by nine double faults from Sprem to record the win.

Also winning second-round matches were Ukranian Olga Savchuk and Russian Elena Vesnina. Savchuk upset 23rd-seeded Serbian Jelena Jankovic 6-3, 6-4, while Vesnina downed Julia Schruff 6-0, 7-5.
