Buffalo Bills head coach Mularkey quits

BUFFALO, N.Y., Jan. 13 (UPI) -- The Buffalo Bills Friday announced the resignation of Coach Mike Mularkey a week after owner Ralph Wilson said he would return next season.

Mularkey, who had three years remaining on a 5-year contract, finished 5-11 this season after leading the Bills to a 9-7 record in his first year.

Mularkey had been expected to remain head coach after Wilson fired team President and General Manager Tom Donahoe on Jan. 4 and hired Marv Levy as vice president of football operations.

Levy, 80, said he would not return to coaching.

"I was looking forward to working with (Mularkey) ... but this is the decision he made and we have to move forward with it," Levy told The Sports Network.

With Mularkey's departure, at least 10 NFL teams will have new coaches next season.
