Kwan appeals for spot on Olympic team

ST. LOUIS, Jan. 12 (UPI) -- Figure skater Michelle Kwan has petitioned the U.S. Figure Skating Association for a spot on the Olympic team.

Her injury waiver request was made despite her one-year absence because of injury. The 25-year-old Kwan has participated in only one of the last six skating competitions. Her latest ailment, a right groin injury, also forced her to miss this week's U.S. Championships in St. Louis.

"My doctor and I feel that I can get back to that (championship) level and be completely ready for the Olympics," she said on the USFSA Web site. "For that reason, I am petitioning for a spot on the team."

Kwan is a five-time World and nine-time U.S. champion. Her latest injury occurred while she was practicing on Dec. 17, and doctors told her to limit her ice time and skating activities.
