Cricket fans to make do with highlights

NEW DELHI, Jan. 10 (UPI) -- A directive by India's Supreme Court will allow millions of Indian cricket fans to see only 90-minute highlights of their team's upcoming series in Pakistan.

The highlights will be offered by the state-owned Doordarshan network for those who do not have cable television.

The highlights will be provided free of cost by the official rights-holder, Ten Sports, a Dubai-based company which had challenged a lower court ruling that it should share the live feed with Doordarshan, reports the BBC.

The Ten Sports channel is available via cable TV in India, but because of its relative high cost has very limited reach, the report said. But Doordarshan is available to the vast majority of the viewers.

A test series between the two rival neighbors always generates excitement across South Asia.

The current series, which begins this week, has added significance as the countries continue with their peace process. About half a billion people are expected to watch the matches that are part of the ongoing cricket diplomacy between the two nations.
