Edwards new Kansas City coach

KANSAS CITY, Mo., Jan. 9 (UPI) -- New York Jets Coach Herman Edwards was named Monday as the new head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Kansas City Star reported Edwards and the Chiefs agreed to a four-year deal worth around $12 million. Because he was still under contract with the Jets, Kansas City traded a fourth-round pick in the upcoming draft to New York as compensation.

During his five-year with the Jets, Edwards became the only coach in the club's history to reach the playoffs in three of his first four years.

The Jets were 39-41 overall under Edwards. New York lost in overtime at Pittsburgh in last year's divisional round, with former kicker Doug Brien missing two potential game-winning field goals.

However, a rash of injuries and instability at the quarterback position limited the Jets to four wins this season.

Edwards will replace Dick Vermeil, whom he played for with the Philadelphia Eagles from 1977-82.
