COL BKB: Memphis 73, Winthrop 63

MEMPHIS, Jan. 8 (UPI) -- Rodney Carney recorded 21 points and six rebounds Sunday as fourth-ranked Memphis beat stubborn Winthrop, 73-63.

Darius Washington Jr. had 14 points, two rebounds and three assists while Andre Allen added 11 points and two assists for the Tigers (13-2), who have won two in a row since a 69-58 loss to Texas on Jan. 2.

Craig Bradshaw had 15 points and four rebounds; Phillip Williams recorded 14 points and five assists; and Michael Jenkins added 10 points for the Eagles (7-4), who were within 66-60 with 3:03 remaining.

Both teams got solid contributions from their reserves, with Winthrop getting 27 points from the bench and Memphis getting 22.

Winthrop out-rebounded the Tigers, 31-28. Winthrop committed 17 turnovers to 15 for the Tigers.
