KAPALUA, Hawaii, Jan. 5 (UPI) -- Olin Browne fired a 4-under-par 69 Thursday to grab the first round lead at the Mercedes Championship in Kapalua, Hawaii.

After the first 18 holes, Browne has a one-stroke lead over Vijay Singh, who carded a 3-under 70 in the season-opening tournament on the PGA Tour.

Sergio Garcia, David Toms, Stuart Appleby and Carl Pettersson are two strokes back at 2-under 71. Among those who struggled were Ben Crane (79), Jason Gore (80) and Brad Faxon -- who was last on the board after an 82.
