Capers fired as Houston Texans coach

HOUSTON, Jan. 2 (UPI) -- The Houston Texans Monday announced the firing of head Coach Dom Capers.

"Well this obviously has been a long, tough year," said Capers. "I'm disappointed that things had to end this way. I understand this business and I understand your job as a head football coach is to win games. Obviously when you put your heart and soul into something and it doesn't work out the way that you wanted and anticipated, then you're disappointed."

The Texans lost to the San Francisco 49ers, 20-17, in overtime on Sunday. Houston ended the season just 2-14 but will have the No. 1 pick in the upcoming draft.

"After a disappointing 2-14 campaign this season we had to make a change," said Texans owner Bob McNair.

Capers had been head coach since the Texans entered the league as an expansion team.
