NHL: Florida 2, Buffalo 1

BUFFALO, N.Y., Jan. 1 (UPI) -- A third-period goal by Gary Roberts Sunday night gave the Florida Panthers a 2-1 win over the Buffalo Sabres.

Joe Nieuwendyk also scored once while Nathan Horton, Mike Van Ryn, Olli Jokinen and Jay Bouwmeester had assists, and goalie Roberto Luongo made 28 saves for the Panthers (26-20-5), who beat Buffalo for the third time this season.

Henrik Tallinder scored the lone goal for Buffalo. Maxim Afinogenov and Toni Lydman had assists, and Ryan Miller made 18 saves for the Sabres (26-12-2), who have lost two of their last three games.

The Panthers went 1-for-6 on the power play while Buffalo was 0-for-7. The Sabres out-shot Florida, 29-20.

Florida has a three-game winning streak for the first time this season.
