Schiano was just 3-20 in his first two seasons at Rutgers and didn't win a Big East Conference game in 14 tries, but he was rewarded with a contract extension in December 2002.

"This contract reflects our appreciation for the outstanding work Greg Schiano has done with our football program," said Athletic director Bob Mulcahy in a statement. "He is committed to the total development of our student-athletes on and off the field, and the overall performance of the program in the past five years is a testament to that commitment."

Schiano has a five-year record of 19-38. The school has not played in a bowl game since 1978.
